INTERVIEW
From South Africa to the global Hardcore scene—tell us about your journey. What inspired you to dive into Hardcore music, and how did your origins influence your sound?
I was introduced to Hardcore in my first year of High School back in '91. I made friends with a kid from Belgium. He had some Thunderdomes and a couple of Serious Beats compilations that had some of the earliest Hardcore tracks. Before that, I was always searching for uncommercialized electronic music with some serious attitude. When I heard Hardcore, I was hooked! I did a bunch of odd jobs on the weekends, just to have money for more Hardcore CDs. South Africa didn't really have a Hardcore scene though, so I had to go to a CD store in Cape Town to order whatever I could find in some big ass Catalog book they received every month.I was the only kid in my school that listened to that music. Everybody hated it, but I really didn't give a shit. That was my Nirvana. So I am still very nostalgic about those Early Hardcore tracks, constantly searching Discogs for anything that I might've missed out on.
Your debut track “The Unholy” is packed with dark melodies, screeches, and relentless energy. Can you walk us through the creative process behind the track? What message or feeling were you aiming to deliver?
I'm a big fan of dark melodies and that will remain the main theme of Hellsplice. I started with making the kicks and then just wrote the tune from start to finish. I don't normally work like that though. I've been producing for about 20 years and I've never produced a track in such a way. I've been listening to Hardcore for so long, it just flowed naturally.
The Hardcore scene in South Africa is relatively underrepresented on the global stage. How do you see yourself contributing to its growth, and what’s unique about Hardcore in your region?
Well, I've been living in Japan since 2004, so I doubt that I will have any influence on the Hardcore scene there. To be honest, I don't even know if there is a Hardcore scene. I might actually be the first South African to produce and release a Hardcore track. Before Hellsplice, I released a few Hardcore tracks under a different name. I'm truly hoping that a Hardcore scene will develop in South Africa though.
“The Unholy” has a brutal, apocalyptic energy. What influences—musical, personal, or otherwise—helped shape this signature sound? Are there any artists or experiences that inspire your creative vision?
I have a long list of influences both inside and outside of the Hardcore scene. I'm a big fan of Hip Hop, Break Beats & Thrash Metal too. So I always try to incorporate that into whatever I'm producing.
