INTERVIEW
What inspired you to choose Sienis’ track “Driving Me Crazy” for your first-ever remix in your 20-year career?
Well firstly, I am a big fan of Sienis’s work and also love hanging with the dude, even if it’s just over the internet. We seemed to have a similar childhood, even if it was on opposite sides of the globe. When I first heard “Driving Me Crazy”, I thought that it was his best work thus far. Even my wife walked into my studio a couple of time, inquiring about the tune. So I knew that it was a hit. I always thought that I might suck at doing remixes, which is why I never tried. However, this track has been itching the back of my mind since I first heard it. So I finally did it!
Can you describe the creative process behind remixing “Driving Me Crazy”? How did you approach this project differently from your original productions?
I’d say that the only thing that was different was the fact that I didn’t have to create all the sounds and melodies from scratch. The rest was the usual workflow. First create the beats, then the final drop section of the track so I know what I have to work towards. Then it was just loading all the original sounds and finding a story that works. Making everything talk with each other.
What specific elements of Sienis’ original composition resonated with you and motivated you to create this remix?
Definitely the vocals at first, but as I continued to explore all the sounds individually, there were some expressive distorted pads that resonated with me, so I made sure to use that throughout the remix as the essential foundation of the track.
How do you think your remix of “Driving Me Crazy” will be received by your fans, especially since this is your first remix of another artist’s work?
I am notoriously bad at judging how people will receive any of my tracks. Sometimes I think it’s not my best work, only to see people raving about it. So…I think this is the worst song I ever did. Just kidding.
What challenges did you face while remixing “Driving Me Crazy,” and how did you overcome them?
I actually had an original concept for the track. It was going to be much shorter in length. However, about halfway into the production I already had so many ideas popping up and non of them were going to work with what I had going on. So I had to make an awful, but smart choice to just delete the project and start over. I’m happy I did though. The end result is way better than what I had originally planned.
Can you share any behind-the-scenes stories or moments during the remixing process that stood out to you?
One of the late nights that I was working on the track, I was really tired and had to go to sleep. I was just about to close the project and suddenly got a simple idea to drop the bass a few semitones on a certain part of the track to follow what the vocal was doing. It became one of my favorite parts of the remix. So simple, yet effective. When I sent the remix to Sienis, he replied with a time stamp of his favorite part of the track. It was indeed that part where the bass follows the vocal. Mission accomplished!
How do you feel this remix will influence your future projects or approach to music production? Are you open to remixing other artists’ tracks in the future?
Certainly yes! I’ve got a taste for it now. Don’t think that it’ll change the way I work that much though. There’s always some small changes in the way you do things with the next track. That’s why we get better at it. Sometimes it goes down the wrong road though. Then you need to paddle backwards to first principles before going down a different road.
